Upcycle - The Importance of Purchase

With so much talk around the current climate crisis and the desperate need for the world to become environmentally friendly, The Apple Guy investigates the importance of upcycling.

Let's face it; we are all very dependent on our devices. Internationally, Covid-19 lockdowns have proven how reliant we are on our computers and technology. They not only allow us to continue to work, but they also provide a distant educational platform for our children. Not to mention - they provide us the opportunity to interact with others from the comfort of our loungerooms.

The stats are very interesting! Research from new data from the American price comparison engine Flipsy, states that the average person will purchase 22 smartphones in their lifetime. This is an average only if you purchased your first phone at the age of 18 with an average upgrade cycle of 32 months.

However, when you consider that most under 12s now have phones, the number of possible new phones you will own in your lifetime (or those of your children) could be higher. With some data suggesting this could be closer to 43 phones in a lifetime! This also equates to a whopping $75,000 (USD) or $104,772.15 (NZD) in a lifetime. Taking into account the phone, usage, and apps.

It’s also suggested that the average person will own 15-26 laptops, 17 desktops, and 35 tablets!

But the more distressing component, rather than the pain in your hip pocket, is what happens to all of these phones and computers? Today, many main providers now recycle these phones and computers for parts and salvageable materials. But sadly, many still end up in landfills around the globe.

What’s the Answer?

The growing trend to want the latest and greatest computer or phone is also driving the desire to upgrade at a far quicker rate than in previous years. This is particularly true with the younger generation who pride themselves on the model and make of their phone and laptop.

A refurbished phone or computer is a pre-loved device. Interestingly not all refurbished phones and computers have been previously damaged or faulty. Some have been traded in for an upgrade, or even returned after the cooling-off period. With others being sent back to the provider for repair and resale.

Before resale, these computers and phones are thoroughly tested and repaired. Including battery maintenance, charging points, and ensuring all the buttons, speakers and cameras are in working order. Audio and screen quality is also assessed as too the internet connections through Wi-Fi and 3g/4g.

Many refurbished products come in their original boxes, with the charger to match the model and make. They also look shiny and just like new - minus the jaw-dropping price tag or major hike in your monthly mobile bill.

Many tech fanatics, and teenagers alike, will oversee a refurbished phone or computer, when in fact; they are just as powerful (if not more so) than the latest tech available. Plus; the savings can be immense. Refurbished phones and computers are sold at much lower prices, this is particularly beneficial for those who have lost or damaged their phone or computer.

Let’s not forget the benefit for many nervous parents! It’s not uncommon to hear of the anguish after an expensive purchase, only to find a soggy phone or computer stuffed in the bottom of a school bag from a leaking drink bottle.

For parents of this tech generation, refurb purchases are a must. With most busy households having more than one laptop, tablet, phone, and desktop the costs in replacement due to general mishaps can be enormous. Choosing refurbished products can save families tens of thousands of dollars over the years.

Refurbished phones and computers are also 100% environmentally friendly. They are a recycled product that has been prevented from entering our landfills. For the environmentally-conscious teen, wearing their refurbished phone should be a badge of honour compared to only focussing on the model number printed on their phone or computer.
